Curating a timeless wardrobe
In today’s world of one-season trends, fast fashion and an endless abundance of options online, I think it’s more important than ever to find confidence in your personal style and purchase pieces that will last (both quality- and style-wise) for years to come. And while I love a trending silhouette or shoe style, there are some things that will always withstand the test of time.
If you know me, you won’t be shocked that I’m starting with my favorite pair of SLVRLAKE denim. The wash, the cut - these are so “neutral” when it comes to denim, pair perfectly with just about anything and work for all seasons. A good quality pair that make you feel good every time you put them on is my #1 must.
Even though Birmingham is rather mild, I’m also a firm believer in a quality coat. Barbour is a classic and this tailored wool coat can be worn casually or with evening wear. And on the cold front, these Loeffler Randall black leather boots are an investment, but the brand has proven to last season after season and this pair specifically (in my opinion) will never go out of style. And bonus, they’re incredibly comfortable!
I recently saw a girl I follow on Instagram style a thin belt over a wrap sweater and was reminded how a beautiful belt can elevate (and totally change) an outfit. This leather belt from Aureum is such a classic and in the perfect taupe so it pairs well with all color pieces. My second pick would be the black/gold color way!
While I do love a good watch, I realize these can be personal and come at a higher price-point. In my opinion, a link bracelet can just as easily add interest to an outfit but comes without the sticker shock. Dorsey’s Leonora bracelet is stunning and I’ve loved mixing it with other pieces that I’m gifted or I purchase throughout the years. I also love their Clemence necklace - nothing is better at elevating an athleisure look or taking a nice outfit to the next level. And all of Dorsey’s pieces exude that “passed down over generations look” without the corresponding price tag. Last note on these and maybe an unpopular opinion: yes, you can absolutely mix metals, so don’t feel like you can only choose one!
Moving onto those warm summer months - I have an outfit in mind that I wear on repeat year after year. Like the SLVRLAKE jeans, a pair of denim shorts that fit just right are an absolute must and for me, that’s this Citizens of Humanity pair. Depending on how far along in the summer we are, I usually pair mine with this classic white button down from KMJ (with the most fun sleeves AND can be tossed in the wash) or Anine Bing’s perfect white Auburn Tee. Both are year-round staples and don’t lose their crisp white color or their structures with wear. And for those days where you simply cannot bring yourself to slip on any denim, this eyelet Penny Dress is my favorite throw-and-go and comes at a great price point with the sweetest hem details.
Okay, two things that might not be considered “staple pieces” to many (but they are in the Hechart household) are swimwear and pajamas! This Hunza G swimsuit might scare you as a one-size, but I promise you it will be your favorite summer basic and is perfect for my pre-, mid- and post-pregnancy gals. The quality is unmatched and lasts well beyond one beach season. The black is classic, but all of the colors will leave you wanting another. And finally… the most timeless pieces in my drawers have a LAKE label on them (if you get it, you get it). LAKE can do no wrong in my eyes and who knew I would have such a PJ collection at the ripe age of 30? They will simply never go out of style and I have gifted a pair to every special lady in my life.
Above all else though, finding pieces that you feel comfortable and beautiful in are the most timeless ones. Trends are fun, but are seldom loved by everyone, so these closet staples serve as the perfect base to add touches of fun to and experiment around!
